Officials said that a Miami to Barbados American Airlines flight was forced to return to the airport due to cabin fumes.

According to spokesperson Greg Chin, Flight 338 left Miami International Airport on Wednesday night but had to turn around because of a potent chemical smell coming from a passenger’s carry-on.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue assessed the passengers and crew who had exited the aircraft on the airfield, according to Chin. After that, a bus took them back to the terminal.

In a statement, American Airlines said that every customer had the option of staying in a hotel. The new time for the flight is Thursday morning.

The number of passengers on the aircraft was unclear.
