The future low-cost national airline of Dominica, Arajet Airlines, has announced that it would formally begin operations on September 15, 2022.

The airline will provide commercial passenger flights to and from the Caribbean and throughout North, Central, and South America. In its most recent statement, Arajet also disclosed that it had decided to launch from Mexico City (MEX).

The carrier intends to grow its network after its debut by introducing further routes to over 20 destinations in 12 countries during the initial three months.

Arajet’s initial network will include routine flights to Monterrey (MTY), Barranquilla (BAQ), Cali (CLO), Cartagena (CTG), Quito (UIO), Guayaquil (GYE), Lima (LAP), as well as Guatemala City (GUA), San Salvador (SAL), St. Martin (SXM), Aruba (AUA), and Curaçao with a goal to begin flying to destinations across the US (CUR).

The airline then plans to introduce flights to Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL), Medellin (MDE), Bogota (BOG), San Jose (SJC), and Kingston beginning in October 2022. (KIN).

Regarding ticket costs, the airline will begin operations with one-way rates starting at $55 and round-trip fares starting at $149.

“We promised low fares and we are announcing our trademark low fares never seen before in our country,” Arajet chief executive Victor Pacheco said.

Dominican Wings, a charter airline founded in late 2014, changed its name to Arajet and refocused on the low-cost carrier business model.

The carrier now has its Air Operator Certificate (AOC), which it obtained from the Dominican Republic’s civil aviation authorities, and is based at Santo Domingo’s Las Americas Airport (SDQ). Over the next five years, it intends to fly more than seven million passengers annually.

Four Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft made up Arajet’s fleet as of August 2022, two of which are leased from Griffin Global Asset Management, according to data from Planespotters.com. The fifth aircraft of this kind is currently on its way to the new airline.
