To satisfy the increased demand for transatlantic travel in summer 2022, British Airways is expanding its route network to the United States.
British Airways will travel to 26 locations in the United States, including Portland, which is the airline’s newest destination. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner will be used on the Portland route.
“This summer British Airways will be flying from 26 US cities to London and we’re very excited to be adding Portland to our list of transatlantic destinations,” Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Director of Networks and Alliances announced in a statement. “Not only are we the only airline to offer direct flights from Portland to London, but this new route also opens a wide variety of connections for our customers.”
This summer, the airline will resume service to San Jose, California, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. British Airways will also start flying between Newark Liberty International Airport and London Heathrow during the day.
The announcement comes just weeks after the airline announced on May 6, 2022 that it will reduce its summer flying schedule by 5% to provide more stable operations. In the third quarter of this year, it expected to restore North Atlantic operations up to 95 percent of pre-crisis levels, according to the presentation of the result.
For the past few months, passengers in the United Kingdom have faced long lines as well as frequent aircraft cancellations and delays owing to staff shortages.
Because of the enormous number of individuals placed on furlough or made redundant during the COVID-19 epidemic, the aviation industry is experiencing staffing issues, making it difficult to rehire to match the subsequent spike in air travel demand.
