While on a layover in Johannesburg, South Africa, a British Airways Captain experienced a terrifying ordeal in which he was held at gunpoint and then stabbed in the leg.
The pilot had apparently left the safe community of Melrose Arch in Johannesburg to go for a jog with a colleague.
After obtaining treatment at a nearby hospital, the pilot was released and allowed to fly home. The pilot was obliged to take a passenger flight home, but BA was able to minimize any disturbance by sending out a replacement crew member from London.
The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office claims that South Africa has a high rate of crime, particularly serious crimes like robbery, rape, and murder.
According to a British Airways spokeswoman, the airline has been providing assistance to both victims.
