Reuters reported that United Airlines expressed excitement about starting flights to Cuba before the end of 2022.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Chicago-based airline stopped operating to Cuba in March 2020.

The airline, which has been working hard for months to restart the flights, has reportedly petitioned the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for an additional 30 days to complete the necessary procedures. The airline was originally given a deadline of October 31, 2022, by the DOT.

The airline has to finish building infrastructure in Terminal 3 at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport (HAV), where United is moving, as well as renegotiating contracts with service suppliers that have expired.

The Trump administration’s flying bans to Cuba were lifted by the Biden administration. In September 2022, approval has been given for 13 weekly American Airlines (A1G) (AAL) departures from Miami and a weekly JetBlue Airways departure from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
