In terrible weather and low visibility late on Sunday night, an Airbus A330-300 operated by Korean Air was reported to have overshot the runway at Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Philippines.

The aircraft appears to have crashed through an airport fence at the end of one of the runways in photos of the accident scene that have been shared on social media, flipping its tail into the air.

The 24-year-old plane took off from Seoul Incheon on Sunday evening at 7:20 pm, but bad weather forced it to into a holding pattern over Cebu.

The pilots had already attempted two unsuccessful landings before the ‘runway incursion’ happened on the third try, according to data provided by Flight Radar 24.

With a capacity of 276 people, Korean Air operates two variants of the Airbus A330-300.

The Seoul-based airline said in a statement that a disaster involving flight KE631 had occurred after the plane “deviated from the runway due to adverse weather during the landing at Cebu Airport.”

Without offering any other information, the airline stated that it was looking into the situation. A spokeswoman was unable to quickly establish whether any crew members or passengers had been injured.
