A new Malaysian low-cost airline is getting ready to take to the sky. MYAirline is nearing completion of its preparations and expects to start flying in the fourth quarter of 2022.
The airline’s CEO, Rayner Teo, told the local news portal Malaysia Now that it would begin operations with three Airbus A320-200 aircraft to provide domestic flight operations, though specifics regarding the launch date and the airline’s initial destinations have not yet been made public.
Teo claimed that the idea to launch MYAirline was motivated by the success of low-cost carriers in the region’s consumer market.
Recently, AirAsia, regarded as a successful low-cost airline in Malaysia, marked its 20th anniversary.
Teo stated that MYAirline has future intentions to offer domestic and international flights.
“But we want to keep the flight range within four hours because that’s the sweet spot when it comes to low-cost carrier operations,” Teo said.
MYAirline Sdn Bhd submitted a low-cost carrier application to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) in February 2021.
Teo further stated that by limiting its use to narrow-body aircraft, the airline will adhere to the fundamentals of low-cost airline operations.
MAVCOM authorized the issuance of Conditional Approval for an Air Service Licence to MYAirline in December 2021 for a one-year period ending on December 31, 2022.
