Tanzania’s Lake Victoria was the location of a Precision Air ATR42 small airplane disaster, according to the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC).
On November 6, 2022, early in the morning, a Precision Air ATR42 turboprop with the registration 5H-PWE was operating passenger flight PW494 between Bukoba (BKZ), in Tanzania’s northwest, and Dar-es-Salaam (DAR), the country’s capital.
Local media reports that the pilots unsuccessfully attempted to land at the destination airport before the incident occurred in stormy weather. The plane, which apparently had 39 passengers on board, went down in Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa.
A witness provided video from the scene of the incident, which showed the airplane sinking. Above the level of the lake, only the plane’s tail was visible.
A rescue group has been sent to the area.
So far, 19 passengers have been rescued.
