The first flight by Qantas, the national airline of Australia, flew from Perth Airport (PER) to Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) in Rome on June 25, 2022, and touched down there at 08:45 local time on June 26, 2022.
The seasonal service is the first non-stop link between Australia and continental Europe, and it was officially announced in December 2022. From Sydney, the most populous city in Australia, travelers can take QF5 to Perth for a four-hour layover before continuing on to Rome.
At PER’s Terminal 4, guests were treated to an accordion player and a gelato cart to commemorate the journey.
Mark McGowan, the premier of Western Australia, was one of the travelers on board QF5’s inaugural flight.
To promote Western Australia as “Continental Europe’s gateway to Australia and a world-class destination to work, study, and visit,” McGowan stated in a Facebook post that he will be traveling to Europe.
“As part of Reconnect WA, I’ll be hosting a series of roundtables in Italy and in the United Kingdom, meeting with key partners and businesses in Ireland and Qatar, and showcasing why there is no better place to visit, study, invest and work with than WA,” McGowan said.
McGowan also affirmed that Qantas will resume operating its PER-FCO flights from June to October 2023.
