An extensive new agreement between United Carriers and Emirates that could result in the two international airlines providing passengers with much more flight options is about to be announced.

For a joint “special event” in Washington, D.C., on September 14, the carriers extended invitations on Tuesday.

The invitations were sent out hours after The Air Current claimed that a new codeshare agreement between the United and Emirates was approaching.

A similar agreement would enable both airlines to sell tickets on specific flights that were operated by the other, providing customers with extensive connections throughout each airline’s network of routes.

Emirates would have much more access to the American market, while United would probably acquire new markets in Africa, the Middle East, and India.

Cooperation would signify a significant improvement in the ties between United and Emirates. The growth of Gulf carriers, such as Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways, to the United States, was aggressively resisted in 2015 by United, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, who claimed that they were simply dumping capacity on the market with the support of their respective governments.

For now, we have to wait until September 14 to find out what United and Emirates are up to.
